Vrata od Krča

The Gate of the Slough, a protected cultural property of Croatia
The monument The Gate of the Slough was erected in 1779 by the nobles of Turopolje in Turopoljski lug, the Latin inscription on the wooden beam reads: “Here the meadows of the noble Turopolje people bloomed, which, over the course of five years of joint work and dedication, were cleared by diligent hands. In 1774, they began to be cleared, and finally in 1779 they were divided among all the brothers, who received equal shares here.” The original wooden structure was destroyed in the flood of 1914, after which a new concrete gate was built in 1916, which still stands today as a reminder of the historical events of this region.

Old Town Lukavec

The Old Town Lukavec, located south of Velika Gorica, was first mentioned in 1256. Originally a wooden fortress, it served as a defense against Ottoman attacks, and was later rebuilt in stone. Today, it is well preserved and represents a valuable example of fortification architecture, and often hosts cultural events and manifestations.

Wooden Chapels

Wooden chapels represent a unique cultural heritage of northern Croatia, particularly prominent in the regions of Turopolje, Pokuplje and Vukomeričke gorice. Built mostly in the 17th century from oak, these sacral buildings reflect the pinnacle of Baroque folk architecture in this region.

Today, only 11 wooden chapels have survived: three in Turopolje, two in Vukomeričke gorice and six in Pokuplje. They were built by craftsmen from the Palir and Carpenter Societies, and are characterized by their construction of oak beams and shingle roofing.

Among the most famous examples is the Chapel of St. Barbara in Velika Mlaka, built in 1642, which is considered the most representative example of wooden sacral architecture in Croatia. The interior of the chapel is adorned with a wing altar depicting the life and martyrdom of St. Barbara and around 150 painted panels depicting saints and plant motifs.

For music and culture lovers, the Festival of Wooden Chapels “Sancta Barbara” offers a unique opportunity to visit these historical buildings with concerts by prominent musicians. The festival is held in the chapels of Velika Mlaka, Brest Pokupski, Buševac, Lijevi Štefanki and other places, bringing these spaces to life through musical events.

A visit to these wooden chapels provides insight into the rich history and tradition of northern Croatia, offering a unique experience combining natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Turopolje Museum

In the very center of Velika Gorica is the Turopolje Museum, located in a historic building from 1765 that once served as the town hall of the Noble Municipality of Turopolje.

The museum preserves a rich collection of archaeological, ethnographic, and cultural-historical objects that depict the life and customs of this region through the centuries. The museum’s holdings include around 3,500 objects and over 20,000 photographs and negatives.
